HKUST-SUSTech Joint PhD Training Program (SUSTech)

(Note: The HKUST-SUSTech Joint PhD Training Program has been terminated with effect from 2023-24 intake.)

  1. The HKUST-SUSTech Joint PhD Training Program is a 2+2 study arrangement jointly offered by HKUST and the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). The purpose of this Program is to foster collaborative research between HKUST and SUSTech. Agreement for establishment of the program was first signed in November 2015,  renewed once in January 2019 and renewed again in September 2021 for another 3 years.
     
  2. The intake size is agreed by the two institutions one year ahead of the year of admission. For 2022-23, it should be no more than 20 students.
     
  3. The intended program duration is 4 academic years. Students are required to spend 2 years of their residency at HKUST, and another 2 years at SUSTech. On completion of their studies, students will receive a PhD degree from HKUST, and a certificate of completion from SUSTech confirming that they have completed doctoral level studies at SUSTech.
     
  4. SUSTech shall provide financial support for 20 students for 24 months during their residency at HKUST, at a rate same as the prevailing monthly PGS offered by HKUST. Students have to be in within-time mode of study in order to receive the SUSTech PGS funding.
     
  5. Students are required to pay the tuition and miscellaneous student fees to the respective university during their period of study there. They are also responsible for lodging and travel costs, study and living expenses, application fees, visa fees, and insurance fees incurred.
     
  6. The Guidance Notes for this Joint PhD Training Program, covering administrative details and a work schedule, is updated every year in November. The timeline of the exercise is as follows:
