PG Visiting Internship Students (Research Only)
- PG Visiting Internship Students (PG VIS) are admitted to HKUST for a short period to conduct research to fulfill their directed research assignment or internship requirement at their home institution. Applicants should be PG students currently studying outside of Hong Kong. The internship period is 1 to 6 months.
Admission
- PG VIS applications are received on a rolling basis, and should be submitted at least 3 months prior to the proposed internship period. Information for applicants is available at https://fytgs.hkust.edu.hk/pgvis.
- PG VIS applicants are required to seek agreement from an HKUST faculty member for admission before applying via the PG OAS.
- Applicants are required to upload a completed Support from Home University/ Institution Form with their application to indicate support from their home institution.
Registration and Administration
- Applicants who need a student visa / entry permit to study in Hong Kong may apply through HKUST. For details please refer to https://fytgs.hkust.edu.hk/visa. Students are only allowed to proceed to program registration with a valid visa.
- It is compulsory for PG VIS to subscribe to the HKUST Compulsory Travel Insurance Plan for their internship at HKUST. Students are only allowed to proceed to program registration with the subscribed insurance plan.
- PG VIS will register as full-time students and enroll on a special 1-credit project course during the internship period. They need to pay tuition fee for 1 credit.
- PG VIS will be subjected to academic regulations of the University for full-time students, and have access to educational, sports and recreational facilities on campus. Regular students should have priority over PG VIS in terms of faculty time, resource availability and use of facilities.
- The University does not guarantee accommodation for PG VIS.
- At the end of the internship period, an academic transcript will be issued to the student. A copy will be sent to their home institution for record.
Funding
- To promote diversity, the University provides sponsorship to selected international PG VIS under the International Visiting Internship Student Program (IVISP). This is a matching fund scheme, and the sponsorship is subject to the agreement of supervisor and the availability of funds.
- Alternatively, supervisors may pay PG VIS an allowance from their own research grants. The total allowance/financial support received by PG VIS must not exceed the prevailing PGS rate.
Extension
- If necessary, PG VIS may apply for extension of internship period by submitting the Request for Extension of PG Visiting Internship Period Form. Upon approval, PG VIS need to apply for a valid student visa/entry permit to cover the extended period. Students from Mainland China, Macao and Taiwan should note the policy of the Hong Kong Immigration Department (IMMD) stipulates that the cumulative duration of short-term studies should not exceed 180 days within any 12-month period.
