Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)

  1. Our University has been drawing the best doctoral students from around the world through the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC). HKUST has the largest HKPFS awardee community in Hong Kong, with 850+ HKPFS recipients. It is expected that Schools/AIS and Departments should use their best efforts to recruit as many top doctoral students as possible through this exercise.

  2. Application for HKPFS starts from September every year, and the nomination exercise runs from early December to end of next January. The timeline of the HKPFS exercise is shown below:
    HKPFS
  3. HKPFS awardees will receive a monthly stipend of HK$28,100 and an annual conference travel allowance of HK$14,000 for 4 years, as of 2024/25. The PGS rate and the allowance may be adjusted, subject to RGC’s decision. HKPFS awardees can also receive the HKUST RedBird PhD Award of HK$40,000 in the first year of study, subject to University approval.

  4. For local and international applicants who have been nominated by HKUST to RGC for HKPFS 2025/26 but not awarded, 90% PGS matching will be offered by the University upon their enrolment to HKUST. The PGS Matching for future intakes will be subject to University approval.
